From Cathy Lyttle:
How did a news journalist end up working for a Fortune 1000 metals manufacturer?
It took a pass through some news rooms, a Chamber of Commerce and a Sports team before arriving at a job that would take me around the world. Worthington Industries is firmly planted in Central Ohio, but it stretches across the U.S., across the Atlantic and to Asia. But it’s the company’s culture, grounded in an enduring philosophy that has made the Worthington a best company to work for and an admired one. I’m proud of my 16 year career here heading up communications and investor relations.
My career took me down a number of paths, but there were commonalties that bridged them and opportunities in each to stretch myself. I’m appreciative of the opportunity to be the senior female at Worthington, but also know that it comes with responsibility for the next group of female leaders. Part of that responsibility was finding my voice in the board room and knowing when to effectively use it. It also means being a mentor and knowing that even when I’m not officially mentoring someone, my interactions with them provide guidance and learnings. I’ll talk a bit about some of the challenges of being the only female in the room and how I believe that most of the time, it can be a positive.
I’m also passionate about being involved in the community. I trace a lot of that back to my parents and my time at the Columbus Chamber. I believe we all have to be good stewards of our community and that means giving of our time, talent and treasure. I know that I learn a lot being on non-profit boards that can also apply in my work life. And, it’s also incredibly rewarding and humbling to be involved in organizations that are doing so much for others and improving our community.
